Freeriding on the Pitztal Glacier

The Pitztal Valley is a mecca for winter deep snow enthusiasts – with safe training in the ski touring park, high mountain tours at over 3,000 metres and free off-piste skiing in perfect powder snow.

 

🚡 Dynafit ski touring park on the Pitztal Glacier

The secured ski area offers a choice of three groomed ascent routes (easy to difficult) – ideal for beginners and training in a safe environment.
Start directly at the mountain station (2,840 m) and enjoy deep snow experiences far away from the busy slopes.

🗻 Summit tours at over 3,000 m

More than eight tours take you to impressive three-thousand-metre peaks such as Wildspitze, Brochkogel and Pitztaler K2 – with breathtaking views and deep powder snow. Particularly worthwhile: the tour to Pitztaler K2 from Rifflsee – around 1,600 metres of elevation gain with a gradient of up to 45°.

Untouched natural slopes await at the glacier, Rifflsee, and Hochzeiger – perfect for freeride beginners and pros alike. The famous Pitztal Wild Face Contest attracts freeriders from all over the world and showcases the spectacular terrain.

With over 108 km of cross-country trails, you can enjoy guaranteed snow from the valley to the glacier – for both classic and skating styles.

🌲 Cross-country ski trail – 21.7 km through the winter

The perfectly groomed valley trail runs from Wiese to Mandarfen at around 1,730 metres above sea level – ideal for leisurely gliding through a fairytale landscape.

🚡 High-altitude cross-country trails – Glacier & Rifflsee

Glacier cross-country trail at up to 2,760 m, length: 3–7 km – ideal for altitude training and an early start to the season in autumn.

🌙 Night trail

The illuminated night trail in Stillebach (1 km) offers magical cross-country skiing by lantern light. All trails are free of charge, easily accessible by bus with the Pitztal Leisure Pass and well signposted.

In winter, Pitztal offers over 45 frozen ice falls with more than 58 routes – from easy beginner gardens to technically demanding challenges.

  • Taschachschlucht ice climbing garden (rear valley, near the glacier railway) Ideal for beginners and course participants – well-secured mixed and ice routes with entry levels from WI 2 to WI 4
  • Havanna Route (Neurur, middle Pitztal) An impressive free-standing ice column approx. 35 m high – extremely difficult (WI 6+), only suitable for experienced ice climbers
  • Hexenbesen (‘Shark’, rear Pitztal valley) Very narrow, challenging icefall with mixed passages – for experts (WI 5–6)
  • Notwegfall (rear Pitztal valley) Three high alpine icefalls, very scenic – medium to high difficulty, regularly popular as a day trip
  • Fallebachfall (west of Piösmes) Approx. 60 m high icefall with lines from WI 3+ to WI 5+ – ideal for top rope training and lead climbing technique at intermediate level
  • Luibisbodenfall (‘Ice Princesses’) near Stillebach
    Long, well-visited course icefall with various variants from WI 4 to WI 5 – frequently used in courses
